The recent fire incident that destroyed four beach hotels in Watamu is a stark reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and response. The hotels that got burnt down were; Mbuyu Beach Resort, SDA resort, Mapango Lodge, and Barracuda beach resort. As the Department of Public Works, Roads, and Transport, we commend the bravery and quick response of our team, in conjunction with other departments and first responders, in containing the fire and preventing fatalities.
We urge hoteliers in the tourism sector to prioritize safety measures and invest in fire safety equipment and staff training. We will continue to provide support and collaborate with our partners in the public and private sectors to ensure that the county’s tourism sector remains safe and resilient against disasters such as the recent fire incident in Watamu.
His excellency the Governor Gideon Mung’aro expressed his sympathies and prayers to those that sustained injuries and lost property in the fire. The department expresses its sympathies to those affected by the inferno and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.
